I'm A Veterinary Assistant & There Are 19 Types Of Dogs I'd Never Own – A Small Breed Is Cute But The Baying Is Constant

A VETERINARY assistant has offered her insight into the types of dogs she would never own.

She's distilled her list to 19 pets and the reasons are varied.

But it might help new dog owners decide which breeds suit them best.

She said one small canine was cute, but the baying was constant.

This woman has done her time in the surgery and her selection is born from that experience.

"When I first started in vet med I had such a long list of dog breeds I liked. Now that list is very short," she said in her comment on Reddit.

BEAGLE

She loved them but would never own them because they could be quite noisy.

"They are cute but the constant baying. I would only own one as a hunting dog," she said.

Beagles are scent hounds and are high-energy.

If let off the leash their instincts will kick in as they chase scents with great enthusiasm, infuriating owners.

FRENCH BULLDOG

This breed has enjoyed huge popularity in recent years, but they should come with a health warning.

They are plagued with health problems, most particularly breathing issues.

Their physiology causes serious problems for their respiratory system.

They can also suffer from skin issues and inflammations because of their folded skin.

ENGLISH BULLDOG

This is another of the bulldog family that should come with a health warning.

Sadly, many of the breed's characteristic features create problems for these lovable mutts.

Their flat faces, folds of skin, and noisy breathing cause them major welfare issues.

These are all common complaints for any of the bulldog breeds.

Discover Yourself Through Your Dog: The Vet Tech's Guide CHOW CHOW

They look fluffy and adorable, but chow chows are not the most social of dogs.

Neither are they the most cuddly and can be aggressive at times.

Therefore, early socialization with other dogs, pets, and people is advised.

But be warned: they are not easily trainable and can bark a lot.

SHAR-PEI

These exotic-looking dogs are loyal and protective. But their sheer physical appearance causes them health issues.

The folds of skin, so distinctive of the shar-pei, can cause infections and inflammation.

This includes their eyes, which can cause them painful conditions.

And because of their small ear canals, infections can also occur there too.

ROTTWEILER

Like many dogs, the rottweiler has to be properly trained from the off.

Without proper socialization, they can be aggressive.

They must be shown that the human is the top dog in their relationship.

They are big dogs, but owners must be careful not to overfeed them or they can become obese.

GERMAN SHEPHERD

The German shepherd, like all dogs, needs to be trained from puppyhood to encourage safe behavior.

It is a guard dog by nature and their instinct is to protect their family or property.

But this can lead to aggressive behavior if they're left untrained.

But these behavioral problems can be ironed out with good training from early on.

The Malinois must have good socialization from puppyhood is a must for this breed, to avoid latent aggressive traits.

The husky breed is known for pulling sleds across icy wastelands.

Its high energy remains and any owner of a husky must be prepared to give this dog the exercise it requires.

The Australian shepherd dog can be extremely loyal and loving, but can also get bored if not stimulated enough.

When they are bored they can get destructive so lots of exercise is needed - and don't forget about the training.

Toy poodles should come with a grooming warning. These guys require a lot of hair maintenance, and therefore regular grooming.

Miniature Pinschers, otherwise known as Min Pin, are energetic and curious, but they can be stubborn and demanding.

Lhasa apsos are intelligent dogs, but they are a bit stubborn and independent, so training is a must.

The corgi breed was the favorite of the late Queen Elizabeth II. There was always one or two at her heels.

However, they have a tendency to yap and that can cause issues for owners.

Schnauzers are bright dogs, but they need stimulation and exercise if you want to avoid having your furniture or favorite pair of shoes chewed.

Deutsch-Drahthaars were bred for hunting and that instinct still remains. Therefore, these dogs need to be trained and socialized from early on if you want them as a family pet.

Our vet assistant didn't mind poodles. "I don't mind standard poodles but 70% of everything I saw at my clinic was a red or brown doodle and they all looked and acted the same unfortunately," said the veterinary assistant.

"The ones with shaven faces and no mats looked better," she added.
