The report states the child is in rehab and should be home in several weeks. Baylisascaris procyonis is a roundworm found in the small intestines of raccoons. Bloom into fall with perfectly protected mums - Greenhouse Management

Image
Fall comes early when we are talking about mum production and this summer crop is susceptible to its fair share of pests and diseases. Let's start from the top — at propagation. Protect mums from fungus gnats and aphids with foundational, weekly applications of Nemasys ® beneficial nematodes and Velifer ® fungal contact insecticide-miticide. These products work all season long and pinch hit again when thrips turn up to feed on pollen during finish. Good sanitation practices are key to preventing major losses early in production. Botrytis blight and bacterial soft rot are two diseases that can quickly wipe out cuttings. Start with clean, pathogen-free cuttings obtained from reputable sources. Space plants appropriately to increase air circulation and promote rapid drying. Avoid overhead irrigation when possible to reduce splash spreading of spores. Destroy infected cuttings and sanitize trays, benches and tools between crops. Scout regularly! An early symptom of Pythium root rot i

Baby Raccoons Orphaned After Mom Got Caught and Dumped 10 Miles Away - Newsweek

Image
Three baby raccoons have been orphaned after their mom was trapped and dumped 10 miles away, according to a wildlife rescue organization . An Ohio woman had found the raccoons nesting in her ceiling. Instead of calling for help, however, she trapped the mom and took her away, said he Wildlife Emergency Service Team of Southwestern Ohio (WEST). The woman then called the rescue organization unsure of what to do with the remaining babies. The baby raccoons were only 2 weeks old when the woman took their mother away. Raccoons are not weaned until about 12 weeks old, according to WEST. It is not uncommon for them to wander into attics, as it provides warm shelter for them to protect their young. However "there are many humane ways to exclude wildlife," WEST said in a statement. Beth Kelly, president and education director of WEST, told Newsweek this situation was "extremely upsetting" as their hands "truly are tied." WEST shared a picture of one of the baby

Visits from raccoons are a nightly occurrence for many of us, and while they're cute-looking, assuming you ever get to spot them, they can be hell to live alongside, noisily upending trash cans in the search for food, wreaking havoc in the garden, ruining the lawn, annoying pets, eating food you leave out for garden birds, making off with domestic chickens, and even damaging the fabric of your home.  If these signs aren't enough of a clue that you have an infestation, you may spot their tracks on damp ground or their dark-colored, cylindrical-shaped droppings. And you may have been woken by their nightly noises, which in turn will have no doubt woken your dog, and perhaps the whole neighborhood.  So, how do you get rid of raccoons? 'There are methods you can use that will kill raccoons, however, unlike when you are getting rid of mice, whose numbers can multiply alarmingly quickly, we would advise a humane approach that's more about removal or deterren

How to Stop Mosquitoes From Invading Your Outdoor Space - The New York Times

Image
Mosquitoes need just a few ounces of water for their eggs to hatch, which takes anywhere from four days to seven days as the eggs mature and insects emerge, Dan Markowski, PhD, technical advisor at the American Mosquito Control Association, told me in an email interview. "A cup, maybe half a cup, could easily be enough water for mosquitoes to successfully lay their eggs," he said. That's why even though spatial and topical repellents should be a part of your bug-bite defense plan, a "dump and drain" strategy to rid your property of potential skeeter breeding spots pays big dividends. "Preventing mosquitoes from breeding is the best way to ensure you don't get bitten, mostly because it's a numbers game," Markowski said. Contending with a few mosquitoes is much better than contending with lots of mosquitoes, in other words, and letting them multiply unabated in and around your property means you're much more likely to have to deal with the
