Irish Man Fighting For His Life In Thailand After Mosquito Bite

An Irish man is fighting for his life in Thailand after being bitten by a mosquito, with his family forking out €2,700 a day in hospital fees. James Burke has racked up thousands of euros in medical bills after contracting Type 2 Dengue fever, leaving him in a critical condition. The 36-year-old was at an airport in Bangkok ready to return home after spending a few weeks on holiday in the Asian nation, and had texted his family to say he was excited about seeing them. But the text, on November 19, was the last they would hear from him, and a frantic search began after days without communication. His family eventually tracked him to a hospital with the help of Thai friends in Ireland and the staff from the hotel in which he had been staying. Margaret Creed, Mr Burke's sister, told PJ Coogan on 96FM Opinion Line: 'He was in a hospital, critically unwell. Through a Thai translator, they contacted the family members to give consent for James to be intubated and put on a ventilator because he was in respiratory failure.' She said the family were stunned by how quickly James seemed to deteriorate. She said: 'He was in good form in the taxi, a few days later he was in a hospital in a critical condition.' A lot of the details regarding how Mr Burke became so unwell are not yet clear but it is thought he collapsed soon after arriving at the airport. He is one of nine children and is currently in the ICU department of a hospital in Bangkok which his sister says is providing 'excellent care', but his condition is still poor. She added: 'He developed acute kidney failure as well as pneumonia and also has a bleed to his brain and severe nerve injury to his neck and shoulder. 'He developed sepsis as a result of a rare mosquito bite, it's called Dengue Type 2.' The virus is common in the area where Mr Burke was travelling and is transmitted by infected mosquitos. Although originally from Limerick, Mr Burke lives and works in Cork. Ms Creed said: 'He was critical, it was touch and go there. He's still in ICU in the hospital, his medical condition has improved somewhat but he's still being tube fed, he's immobile, he's very confused and disoriented.' The family have been unable to travel to Thailand to be at his bedside as they are paying €2,700 a day for his hospital stay. Even though Mr Burke had taken out travel insurance, Ms Creed said: 'They refused to pay it, they are declining the case.' Ms Creed said the company had refused the claim because when Mr Burke was admitted to the hospital, it was 'past the date and time he was supposed to come home'. She added: 'We can't afford to go there because every penny of our savings has been given to the hospital.

'The doctors and the hospital said that the safest route for James to be able to be repatriated through air ambulance which is coming up to cost €176,000. 'The HSE won't pay for repatriation, they said to us because he had travel insurance, we need to pursue the travel insurance so we don't know where to go.' The family have set up an online fundraiser on GoFundMe in the hopes of being able to pay to bring Mr Burke home. The fund had raised €55k of its €100,000 goal at the time of writing. Ms Creed added: 'That's all we want for Christmas now.'
