Meet Hansel: NJ's 1st pit bull arson detection K9 officer

As March approaches I want to remind everyone that the deadline for registering your pets with your municipality is fast approaching.
The good news is that we finally have a schedule for free rabies vaccine clinics in Cumberland County. The clinics are being held much later than usual and although they are not being held in all towns, you do not need to be a resident of the municipality in which the clinics are being held.
The schedule includes:
- Leesburg Fire Department, 550 Main St., 9 to 11 a.m. March 5.
- Millville Fire Department, 420 Buck St., noon to 3 p.m. March 5.
- Cedarville Fire Department, 30 Maple Ave., 9 to 11 a.m. March 19.
- Hopewell Municipal Building, 590 Shiloh Pike, noon to 2 p.m. March 19.
- Laurel Lake Fire Department, Battle Lane, noon to 3 p.m. April 2.
- Fairfield Township Municipal Complex, 70 Fairton-Gouldtown Road, Fairton, 9 to 11 a.m. Sept. 3.
- Bridgeton Dog Pavilion, Mayor Aitken Drive, Bridgeton, noon to 3 p.m. Sept. 3.
For the safety of the animals as well as people, please make sure that your pets are properly secured and under your control at all times.

For dogs, check that their collars can't slip over their heads. A training collar or harness may be best to ensure your dog does not get loose. They should also be on short leashes that only allow enough slack for them to stand directly at your side and do not allow them approach other dogs. Never use extendable leashes at these type of events.
Cats should always be in actual pet carriers. Prior to placing cats in those carriers, ensure that all screws, clips, zippers and fasteners of any type are absolutely secure. These type of events, where other animals are present can be very stressful for cats; placing a towel or light blanket over the carrier may be helpful in helping them feel safe and reducing their anxiety.
While you're in the process of updating your pet's vaccine, take a minute to ensure they also have proper identification with your current contact information.
Rabies tags are registered with your town, but they don't help if they're not attached to your pet's collar.
Microchips are still the safest form of identification and are available at the shelter or at your veterinarian's office.
Shelter needs: Canned cat and dog food, soft dog treats, hot dogs, plastic frisbees, XL and XXL Kongs, cardboard egg containers, paper towels, liquid hand soap, and gift cards for pet supply and grocery outlets.
Shelter fundraiser: The shelter is holding a Joe Corbi's fundraiser to benefit its enrichment program. Brochures are available at the shelter or order online at https://www.joecorbi.com/store/categories/pizza-more using the participant code 503137. Order forms will be accepted at the shelter through March 15, online ordering stays open a bit longer. Delivery will be scheduled during the week of April 11. DOGS OF THE WEEK
Bernadette is a very sweet, 18-month-old pit bull terrier. This darling girl came to us as a very frightened stray. She is shy in new situations, but she warms up very nicely once she gets comfortable. She is a smart girl, knows the sit command and loves treats. Bernadette wants nothing more than to love and be loved. She just needs a special someone to help her gain confidence and learn that the world can be a gentle place.
Clyde is a striking dog, an Akita/Pit Bull mix, and just a puppy at 9-months-old! Clyde is looking for a home that will give him exactly what a puppy needs – love, training, exercise and all the fun a family can have! Clyde is friendly, loveable and full of personality. He has been around many children and loved them. He has lived with a small dog and also a cat (he is very playful with the cat). He is also housebroken and lived happily as an indoor dog.
Dominique is a darling, 18-month-old pit mix. She came to us as a stray and appears to have had a rough go of it. Despite the neglect she has suffered, Dominique has remained happy, friendly and affectionate. This well-mannered young girl loves attention and is waiting and hoping for her own special person to cuddle up with.
Forest is an adorable, 1-year-old bully breed. He looks like he may have some bulldog in his background and maybe some pit. Forest is a little shy in new situations, but once he warms up and gets comfortable he is a real lover boy. He is affectionate and eager to please. Forest is on the smaller side with a short, stocky build. He weighs in at about 50 pounds. This nice boy is waiting and hoping for a loving forever home.
Harper is a gorgeous, 3-year-old Great Dane mix. She is a big girl, weighing in at almost 80 pounds. Harper is a fun and lively girl with lots of personality. She is friendly and outgoing. Harper is not suited to a home with cats.
Kane is a handsome, 8-year-old husky. He is a friendly and lively guy that is always up for adventure.
Max is a very nice, 3-year-old pit mix. He is a friendly guy who loves attention. This nice boy has an affectionate and lovable personality. He is a real keeper!
CATS OF THE WEEK
Fisher is looking forlorn, he can't understand why no one has picked him yet! Maybe you could be his hero?
Aspen is a beautiful, long-haired girl who just wants someone to call her own!
Peepers is a pretty, senior girl who would like to find a comfortable place to snuggle up and call home.
Atticus is so handsome. This young guy is playful, but he loves a warm lap, too. Stop in to say hi to Atticus. How can you say no to those eyes?
Tostito is a young guy who wants a home where he can play, but he loves to relax, too. Tostito has a strong purr, which lets you know how happy he is.
Warren is a special guy. Despite his age and inability to see, Warren has lots of love to give. He needs a quiet home where he can feel safe. Can you give Warren the home he deserves?
Niblet is still waiting for you! Today we enjoyed a sunspot together. She snuggled right up next to me! If you are looking for a wonderful companion, look no further. Niblet is so sweet.
