Rodents - Washington State Department of Health

Español Rodents such as mice and rats can carry harmful diseases. Diseases from rodents can spread to people through bite wounds, eating contaminated food or water, or breathing in germs from rodent urine or droppings that are stirred into the air. People can also get diseases from rodent ticks, mites, and fleas. In Washington, deer mice are the main carriers of a virus that cause hantavirus in people. Hantavirus is a rare, but potentially fatal respiratory disease. Avoid stirring up the dust in rodent-contaminated areas to help prevent exposure to hantavirus. Don't Attract Rodents The best way to prevent a rodent infestation is to remove their sources of food, water, and shelter. Store pet and people food, bird and lawn/garden seed, and animal feed indoors in containers with tight fitting lids. Clean up food waste and use thick plastic or metal garbage cans with tight lids. Keep the area around your home and outbuildings clear of junk and debris. Trim vegetation an...

Coated in insecticides, farmers’ seeds are a secret ecological disruptor - Inverse

Image
Planting season for corn and soybeans across the U.S. will begin as soon as March in Southern states and then move north. As farmers plant, they will deploy vast quantities of insecticides into the environment, without ever spraying a drop. Almost every field corn seed planted this year in the United States will be coated with neonicotinoids, the most widely used class of insecticides in the world. So will seeds for about half of U.S. soybeans and nearly all cotton, along with other crops. By my estimate, based on acres planted in 2021, neonicotinoids will be deployed across at least 150 million acres of cropland — an area about the size of Texas. What are neonicotinoids? Neonicotinoids, among the most effective insecticides ever developed, can kill insects at concentrations that often are just a few parts per billion. That's equivalent to a pinch of salt in 10 tons of potato chips. Compared with older classes of insecticides, they appear to be relatively less toxic to vertebrates...

How Much Does an Exterminator Cost? Pest Control Costs Broken Down - BobVila.com

Image
Photo: istockphoto.com Typical Range: $111 to $261 National Average: $176 A sudden bloom of spiders in the springtime, a trail of tiny ants, or the occasional group of fleas can be dismissed as seasonal nuisances. But a cockroach scuttling out of sight in the corner of your peripheral vision, mouse or rat droppings in the pantry cabinet, wood dust suggesting termites, or a string of bedbug bites on your leg is another matter entirely and can quickly become matters of health and safety. For small infestations, extermination may be something you can handle yourself, but larger infestations or pests can cause structural damage or serious health concerns that warrant professional treatment. Before you call in assistance, there are several factors to consider and questions to ask as you begin to assess how much to budget. Keep unwelcome visitors out of the house An exterminator can help. Is a Red Panda a Bear? And More Red Panda Facts - Smithsonian's National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute

Image
What do red pandas eat? Red pandas may have the digestive system of a carnivore, but they are practically vegetarians. About 95% of their diet is bamboo! They eat the nutritious leaf tips and tender shoots, but skip the culm (woody stem). They also forage for roots, grasses, fruits, insects and grubs. Red pandas may sometimes hunt birds and small mammals, too. At the Smithsonian's National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute, red pandas eat leafeater biscuits, bamboo and bamboo shoots (when in season). As enrichment treats, they like to snack on apples, grapes, bananas, blueberries and other produce. What is a group of red pandas called? A group of red pandas can be called a pack, but they rarely encounter each other. Red pandas are solitary except during the breeding season when it's not uncommon to see a male and female pair (or even a male and two females). Baby red pandas usually arrive in late spring to early summer (in the northern hemisphere) and stay with...

Serious garden pests: voles, moles and gophers | The Real Dirt - Chico Enterprise-Record

Image
It's an exasperating experience. You go to the nursery, pick out a flowering plant, shrub or tree and bring it home only to have some critter damage or destroy it within the first week. Pests cause damage and waste time and money. The most common pests in the home landscape and garden are voles, moles and gophers. By knowing what you're dealing with, it will be easier to eradicate the problem. 'The Real Dirt' is a column by various local master gardeners who are part of the UC Master Gardeners of Butte County. Voles : Also referred to as field or meadow mice, voles are small rodents three to nine inches in size (depending upon the species). They look a lot like hamsters, which are their close relatives. Damage done by voles is often mistaken for that of gophers. Voles are herbivores; they can gnaw on the bark of trees and shrubs, or simply eat the roots. They will also eat the tops of new vegetable transplants, leaving behind damage similar to deer nibbling. If you ...
