Richmond ranks 14 on Orkin's top termite cities list - WWBT

Image
RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) - As the beginning of home-buying season begins, pest control company Orkin releases this year's Top 50 Termite Cities list, Richmond has ranked 14 on Orkin's list moving up 17 spots from last year. Orkin determines this ranking based on the amount of first-time customer termite treatments in one metro area. Richmond ranks just above large cities like San Francisco (#15) and Philadelphia (#17). "Termites are able to hide in your home for years, secretly damaging your home without ever being acknowledged," said Glen Ramsey, Orkin entomologist. "Some species of termite queens lay millions of eggs each year that hatch and grow into wood-eating machines, wreaking havoc within the foundation of your home and causing extensive damage. Therefore, it's important to take action on preventative measures that will protect your home." The ideal environment for these "silent destroyers" is a warm, damp, wooden area. The Best Roach Killers - The New York Times

Roaches are tenacious, so you may need to expand your approach to include bait gels and powders. We have recommendations for those, as well as advice on stuff that does not work, including kill-on-contact sprays, bombs, and foggers. Our pick Terro T500 Multi-Surface Roach Baits Terro's traps are easier to monitor than those of competitors. And they stay put on vertical surfaces, so you can place them close to where roaches live. Buying Options *At the time of publishing, the price was $10 . The Terro T500 Multi-Surface Roach Baits are little cartridges filled with an insect bait—a mixture of food and a slow-acting poison. The delayed action of the poison increases its overall effectiveness, since it allows a roach to pass the poison to other roaches before the roach dies (and even afterward; if you want to go straight to the disgusting details on how that works, be our guest). The Terro bait stations have a number of features most roach baits lack. The top of the bait station is ...

Breadcrumb Trail Links Local News Columnists It is difficult to have a guaranteed, 100 per cent animal-proof house, especially as houses age and maybe repairs are left undone or deficiencies unnoticed. Photo by Errol McGihon / Postmedia Article content This is the time of year when wild animals will, literally, rip into your house and move in. Monday night, about to slumber off in a second-floor bedroom, when a scratching sound came from the attic. Not a little scratch, but something louder, more than a mouse, say, but less than a bear. I did the sensible thing at 11 p.m.: whacked the wall and hoped it would go away. More scratching. Up a step-ladder we went, popping open the ceiling...

County may help animal control officer shortage - The Ellsworth American

Image
ELLSWORTH — The role of animal control officer is proving to be a difficult one to fill for some local towns, so Hancock County Administrator Scott Adkins is in the early stages of looking at the problem and its potential solutions. Adkins explained that he was approached to look at the issue by the League of Towns, a municipal collaboration that includes Bar Harbor, Cranberry Isles, Lamoine, Mount Desert, Southwest Harbor, Swan's Island, Tremont and Trenton. "It has been a subject for conversation a few times during my six-year tenure here in Hancock County," Adkins said in an email. He is sending out a survey to nearby towns to gauge the communities' needs, level of interest and budget information. While Adkins thinks the problem may one day be county-wide, he is going to start by analyzing the data and researching options for how some towns could work together and potentially negotiate fee-for-service agreements. "In summary, this would not be someth...
