Hidden Dangers That May Be Lurking In Your Attic - House Digest

Image
Asbestos is a mineral that was commonly used in building materials until the 1970s due to its excellent heat resistance, strength, and insulation properties. Developers thought it was an amazing substance until people started getting sick. That was when we discovered that prolonged exposure to asbestos fibers leads to serious health problems, including lung cancer and mesothelioma. Both of these diseases are extremely dangerous and often fatal. If you have an older house, there is a high likelihood that there might be asbestos in the walls, ceilings, or attic. It is especially dangerous in the attic, as it might be completely exposed. If the fibers become airborne and you inhale them, you will become ill. It's not an "if" when breathing in asbestos, it's a "when." Asbestos-containing materials in good condition and undisturbed are not usually a health risk. Average pest control cost Based on our secret shopping, we found that the national average for general pest control plans is $51 per month  or $152 for each quarterly pest control visit if that's how you prefer to pay. Specialized treatments for bedbugs, wildlife control, or termites will increase that number. A one-time visit can range from $150 for ants or fleas to $8,000 for fumigation services. For preventive services, it's best to sign up for a yearly plan, typically paid monthly or quarterly. Note that your initial visit and treatment are typically more expensive than ongoing visits. Depending on your selected provider and services, this initial treatment can range from $99 to $350 . Cost of DIY pest control The cost of do-it-yourself (DIY) pes...

Image
By MADDY ROHR K-State Research and Extension News Service   MANHATTAN — As lawns begin to turn green, controlling weeds and applying fertilizer is important.  Cool-season grasses such as Kentucky bluegrass or tall fescue are among the most common cool-season grasses needing attention, said Kansas State University horticulture expert Ward Upham, who shares the following maintenance calendar.  March Spot treat broadleaf weeds, if necessary. Treat on a day that is 50 degrees or warmer. Rain or irrigation within 24 hours of application will reduce effectiveness. April Apply crabgrass preventer when redbud trees are in full bloom, usually in April. The preventer needs to be watered in before it will start to work. One-quarter inch of water will be enough to water in any of the products commonly available. Remember that a good, thick lawn is the best weed prevention and may be all that is needed. May Fertilize the lawn with a slow-release fertilizer if you water yo...
